Pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Therese of the Child Jesus in Darien, IL

On November 4, 2023, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of St. Therese of Lisieux, a pilgrimage to her National Shrine in Darien, Illinois took place. Five Discalced Carmelites from the community in Munster along with sixteen lay pilgrims took part. The pilgrims arrived around 10:00 AM. A guide showed them around the museum, after which they watched a short film about the life of St. Therese. Next, Holy Mass was celebrated, followed by the Way of the Cross in the garden. The program included a break for coffee and donuts as well as for shopping for souvenirs in the gift shop. The prayer of the Holy Rosary was also included in the program. The pilgrimage was blessed with marvelous weather, to which good humor was added as well. The pilgrims returned to Munster at about 4:00 PM.

The Museum in Darien possesses a rich collection of souvenirs connected with St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. Several relics of the saintly Discalced Carmelite nun are displayed here, including photographs and pictures of her, as well as numerous objects which at one time belonged to her, her family, or other important persons in her life. We can also visit here a replica of the monastery cell in which Sister Therese Martin lived at one time, containing authentic objects from the life of the Saint. Access to more displays is provided by electronic touch screens. The computer presentations help the visitor to become better acquainted with the individual displays and enter more deeply into the atmosphere of that era.
